Intro

Humanity's homeworld is call Terra, but colloquially referred to by the only habital region, the “Ring”. The Ring is an eyeball planet, meaning it is tidally locked to the sun with the sun facing side a scorched wasteland and the apposing side a frozen abyss. Among the locals, these regions are “Hell” and “Heaven”, respectively. Along the borders of the two regions is the Ring, a region of perpetual twilight and conditions precariously balanced between the two extremes. Large weather conditions surge through the Ring bringing devastating heat and sometimes periods of extreme cold (weather is complicated). Humanities only recourse to living on such an extreme world was to flee to the relatively calm of space.

Humanities origins

The origin of Humanity is a constant source of tension for the Humans living on the Ring, and beliefs often fall into one of several camps:

  • (The Chosen) Terra was once a beautiful Edan populated by the Old One's Children. However, the most powerful of her children, split largely into two factions, began fighting and destroyed this paradise. In particular, Humanity was targeted because they were the Old One's Chosen people despite them being much weaker than her Children. To save her creations, the Old One split the world into two large sections and banished her Children to the wastelands they had created. Between these two regions, she place Humanity but warned them to NEVER VENTURE FORTH FROM THEIR HOME. That they were protected on the Ring but her Children would punish them if they left. Due to severe nature of their world, Humanity struggled for a long time. The jealous Children sent strong blasts of heat and cold from Heaven and Hell, both to attack the other side but to also punish the Chosen, and Humanity was nearly wiped out many times during these wars. However, the Humanity survived and eventually mastered their slice of the world. This mastery originally included underground bunkers in which to hide during the worst of the events. Food storage became crucial during these periods. Technology also thrived and offered the ability for Humanity to leave the Ring. The Chosen (those faithful to the Old One) feared that much of this technology offered a temptation that would lead to the end of Humanity and placed strict limits on those technologies that projected Humanity and those that jeapordized humanity.
  • The mainstream or non-believers. Despite this, there were those who pursued these forbidden technologies and lead expeditions into Heaven and Hell. They returned with stories that portrayed a terrible landscapes but that also contained no Gods. They also pointed at evidence of evolution of other creatures on Terra and argued that the same was true for Humanity. Faith in the Old One waned as the non-believers argued that Humanity had evolved naturally on Terra and that the old stories were created to protect humanity from the extreme environments, and thanks to technology, this old way of thinking was no longer needed.
  • Legacy faction There has also been those that have never been satisfied with either explanation. In the Chosen mythos, they point to the stories that Humanity was brought to the Ring but the origin (commonly believed to be Terra itself) was never clearly stated. They also point to the lack of evidence of a pre-Human on Terra if evolution was to be believed and that the biological ecosystem tended to fall into two camps, those that had similar genetic structures as Humans but little sign of evolution, and those organisms with vastly different makeups and that did show clear signs of evolution. While this belief has been largely ignored, recent evidence anchient technology unearthed on Terra and more recent preserved technology (scrap mostly: nuts and bolts, misc debris, nothing solid) discovered in orbit suggest another story. A story of relocation by Humanity's hands and of a forgotten past.

Humanities present

The ring is split into a number of political factions. Over the very long Human history (100,000+ years if some of the earliest evidence is to be believed) and the progress of technology, these factions have merged into 20 prominent countries of various sizes and influences. Some of these countries have strong alliances with some, some have strong hatred toward others, and these are not mutually exclusive.

Some coordination has been required to achieve Humanity's success, and presently it is best represented by a single, large station located on one of Terra's more stable moons (much rocky debris in space, some orbits are safer than others). This station is referred to as _ and is named after the first notable city-state to emerge from planetary-enforced barbarism. A loose agreement of non-agression exists here as many representatives from “The 20” come here to discuss policy and attempt peaceful co-existance. Despite the grand ambitions of __, they have little authority over The 20 and have limited ability to pacify the constantly embroiled nations. As a consequence of the mixed cultures on the station, it has become a wealthy center of trade between Terra, its moons, and the other settlements throughout the solar system.

Other planets and moons exist in the solar system, and Humanity has started settling them. Most are more barren than Terra, but Humanity's will, tempered on Terra, and the drive of capitalism, has made it possible.
